What types of welded pipes are there

Welding Process

Type Process Key Features Applications
ERW/HFW Pipe
(Electric Resistance/High-Frequency Welded)
Steel strip formed → edges heated by HF current (100–500 kHz) → pressure welded. - Seamless-like appearance
- OD tolerance: ±0.5%
- Cost-efficient
Oil/gas pipelines, scaffolding, automotive frames
LSAW Pipe
(Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded)
Steel plate → U/O forming → single straight seam welded via submerged arc. - Thick walls (up to 40mm)
- High pressure rating
- Weld inspected by RT/UT
Offshore pipelines, piling, structural columns
SSAW Pipe
(Spiral Submerged Arc Welded)
Coiled steel → spiral forming → helical seam welded under flux. - Large diameters (up to 4m)
- Flexible length
- Lower dimensional accuracy
Water transmission, foundations, low-pressure fluid transport
CW Pipe
(Continuous Welded)
Hot-rolled strip → continuous furnace welding (obsolete). - Low cost
- Poor weld integrity
- Limited to low-pressure use
Fencing, drainage (gradually phased out)
Laser Welded Pipe Precision laser beam fuses edges (no filler).
